Food Security. FAO's Special Programme for Food Security (SPFS) aims at increasing food
security in Low Income and Food Deficit Countries (LIFDC's) through rapid increases in
productivity and food production as well as through reduction in year-to-year variability
of production on an economically and environmentally sustainable basis. In the pilot phase
emphasis is put on intensification, water control, diversification of production and
resolving socio-economic constraints. In the expansion phase emphasis is on policy reform
and investment. On 6/1/99 the programme was operational in 39 countries.
